Aurelio Montes is the son of one of the most prestigious businessmen in the wine industry in Chile. He decided to settle down in Mendoza with his wife and two children to be close to Bodega Kaiken’s subsidiary in Argentina. Bodega Kaiken can be easily perceived to be a family winery which is run by its owner, not by a CEO. The winery was recycled by its current owners preserving its historical characteristics, which were complemented by avant-garde technology and exterior design.

The Montes family has strongly invested in Argentina, and needed Aurelio (Jr) to be present in the Argentinian venture. He is a young yet experienced winemaker, who not only worked in Chile but also in the United States and Australia. He seemed to be the right person to bring this project to fruition. Full of hope and expectations, he packed his belongings and moved to Mendoza a few weeks ago.
He describes himself as a passionate wanderer and wishes God would give him seven more lives to devote them all to wine.

In his opinion, an Argentinian wine will never let you down, and “each wine, within each category, has a very good performance.” He admires the Argentinian way of pairing food and wine and assures that “here, people drink twice as much wine as Chileans do.” And he believes it is necessary to start describing wines in terms of regions or areas and gradually stop talking about varietals. This way, wines will be better associated with their terroirs.
But a member of the Montes family never comes empty-handed, so we asked Aurelio what he has in store for his new endeavor in Argentina. He answered:
“I came to Mendoza to continue developing the Kaiken project. With this in mind, we’ve been doing research in Salta and Neuquén and we’re planting 150 ha in Vista Flores with Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec, among other varieties. In the short term, we’ll be launching a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot in our limited edition line, with a retail price of ARS 60. We’ll also be putting up for sale our sparkling wine – produced from 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay and aged on its lees for two years – at a price of ARS 95 retail. And this is only the beginning of an ambitious project as we expect to double production by 2015.”
